A Short Story About A Long Journey
In the winter of 1978, there came a blizzard of historic proportions which, for three days and three nights, froze Indianapolis, Indiana. I made a promise to myself that just as soon as that snow cleared out so would I. I arrived in Tucson on August 19th of that same year. I soon got a job at Dorado Country Club on the golf course maintenance crew where I became proficient in all facets of golf course maintenance. In 1981, I took a course with the Pima County Adult Vocational Training Program and became a certified turfgrass manager and was promoted to Assistant Superintendent . I held this position for two and a half years, when, in 1984, I took a job as Irrigation Supervisor on a multi-million dollar landscaping project for Saudi Arabian Landscape Company (SALCO) in Najran, Saudi Arabia.
This was an experience of a lifetime as I supervised a crew of over forty multi-nationals from all over the Middle-East and Asia.
When I returned to Tucson in 1986, I realized that I had completed a task which few folks, in this town, have ever attempted, including falling off the back of a camel.
However, I wasn't as knowledgeable in the everyday operation of a business. So I took jobs with a few major landscape companies in Tucson, learning how each managed books, billings, bids etc. Then, in 1991, I set out on my own and founded Acme Irrigation Company.
